Do you begin and end your day with the world framed by a window or windscreen? Maybe it’s your own or perhaps it is the fingerprint smeared one of the bus or train. Do you run? Or cycle? Do you stare ahead, focussed on the point of horizon, enjoying the sensation of the landmarks flying past you? Or do you walk? Head dead ahead. Music sounding. Telephone chattering. Daydreaming.

Have you walked or driven the same route for as long as you can remember? Have you one day, for whatever reason, looked up and seen something that surprised you? A building above a shop perhaps? A blue plaque? A piece of graffiti impossibly high up? A flag. This blog is about what you can see when you tilt your chin and see a different view of your everyday world.

Look up.

You might enjoy it.

You might see something good.

Spot the Dog

This picture was taken in Manor House, where I lived briefly with a bunch of lovely, if slightly mad, Italians. When I first moved this pub caught my eye - I'm an ale fan and somewhere named 'Ale Emporium' is lightly to make me a bit excitable. Unfortunately at closer look it appeared to sell mainly lagers and always had the football on, loud. I never drank there. Anyway- I still walk past this pub on my way to the supermarket and the other day I passed it at the same time as a man with a dog. And the dog was going mental. I could hear another dog barking back but despite looking pretty much everywhere I couldn't see one, the owner of the dog was doing exactly the same and getting very annoyed. Finally I thought to look up and there he was- a lovely little white staff peering over the lip of the roof. A curt shout and whistle summoned him back out of view and he was gone. Every time I walk past now I'll look up and see if he's there.

Time Keeper

Above a pub in Oxford, this white dog is propping up the time.

Skylight detail

I spent the last week in Oxford (more pics to come) working on a fantastic touring play. For the majority of the nights I stayed in a youth hostel near the town centre. This particular one was very noisy, involved me sharing with several snorers and oddballs which wasn't so fun. One thing I did enjoy about this place though was these minimalistic looking creatures, I'm guessing that they are horses but they do also look a little like dragons too, surrounding the skylight in the corridor. I took the picture very surreptitiously as I didn't want anyone thinking I was a weirdo, though maybe people thought I was one anyway!

Camel Trekking

A friend spotted this trio of camels above the HSBC bank near Monument a couple of weeks ago. Seeing as this particular bank is always banging on about 'being the world's local' it seemed fitting that there would be exotic animals involved. However, I think that it's more likely that it's just a mashing of old and new shop fronts. Still made me smile though.

Tottenham court butterfly

Another lovely example of mosaic, this time in Tottenham Court tube station. A lovely shot of colour to the tube system, sure to brighten up a commute.

Cat in the hedge

The 'neighbours' who live above me have a cat who has recently had kittens. Much to my delight they have spent the last few weeks playing on the flat roof of our kitchen, where the upstairs living room opens out onto. They are super cute and particularly fun to watch as they are forever trying to get up onto things then down off of them but too tiny to do either properly. The mum cat just looks on lazily in some sort of amusement (well I like to think). The other day I was pinning up the washing and heard a scrabbling sound and noticed this little one checking out the hedge...

cat up a wall

This photo is of a wall down an alley down the side of churchyard back home. I’m not sure how long the paw print has been up there- but I’ve always wondered which humorous mason decided to put it so high up and whose naughty cat got into a brick factory.
