Do you begin and end your day with the world framed by a window or windscreen? Maybe it’s your own or perhaps it is the fingerprint smeared one of the bus or train. Do you run? Or cycle? Do you stare ahead, focussed on the point of horizon, enjoying the sensation of the landmarks flying past you? Or do you walk? Head dead ahead. Music sounding. Telephone chattering. Daydreaming.

Have you walked or driven the same route for as long as you can remember? Have you one day, for whatever reason, looked up and seen something that surprised you? A building above a shop perhaps? A blue plaque? A piece of graffiti impossibly high up? A flag. This blog is about what you can see when you tilt your chin and see a different view of your everyday world.

Look up.

You might enjoy it.

You might see something good.

View from the bath

Everytime I have a bath this is the view I get from through the glass shelves above me. Really should give those shelves a scrub and a tidy up!

Northern Steel

Loving these steel girders above the escalator to the tube at Euston today. Something quite retro and industrial looking about them. If I was an Apple fan I'd probably 'instagram' this up so it looked vintage...but I reckon doing that is a bit bollocks and trendy so I'll leave it how it is!

Come on in...

A fantastic view of the lights inside the foyer/cafe of the Wellcome Collection. Simple but smart.

Whiskys Galore

Inside an amazingly well stocked whisky shop in Amsterdam, these low beams are lined with this interesting selection of miniatures. A striking view.

Amsterdam Metro

Happy New Year!! and all that... Hope it's been a good one. Mine was particularly good which is unusual (new year is inevitably very disappointing) as I spent it with my boyfriend in Amsterdam. I only got back yesterday and so there is due to be a flurry of holiday snaps. These first two are from inside the first metro carriage I got on on the way to the hotel. Each metro is decorated with a different design and, whilst a bit bizarre, are pretty cool.

Friendly Buddhist

Blue-tacked up high in a shop in Wood Green, this sign makes a nice change from the ones threatening you about breaking stuff (which always makes me certain that I am going to).

British Museum

An impromptu meet up yesterday with a lovely friend of mine resulted in a trip to see the mummies at The British Museum. The last time I set foot in here was on a school trip when I was about ten and I really don't remember it looking like this. What a fantastic ceiling! Perhaps this is a more recent fixture,or maybe I was just very unobservant as a child. Probably the latter!

Skylight detail

I spent the last week in Oxford (more pics to come) working on a fantastic touring play. For the majority of the nights I stayed in a youth hostel near the town centre. This particular one was very noisy, involved me sharing with several snorers and oddballs which wasn't so fun. One thing I did enjoy about this place though was these minimalistic looking creatures, I'm guessing that they are horses but they do also look a little like dragons too, surrounding the skylight in the corridor. I took the picture very surreptitiously as I didn't want anyone thinking I was a weirdo, though maybe people thought I was one anyway!

Cool Moon and Fiery Saturn

The lampshade in my room often looks like a big, round moon, but from below looks more like Saturn. Two planets in one...

Pie in the sky (well on the ceiling)

My boyfriend took me to this lovely pub in Colchester the other weekend. Whilst enjoying a pint of ale we sat under this sign inside. After admiring it for a while I noticed that someone had written pie on the adjoining wall. Wonder what type of pie they were referring to...

Animal Silhouettes

In the 'Strudel Bar' under Hansel und Gretel's in Bath is a stunning array of German paraphernalia. Tiny liederhosen, wooden cuckoo clocks and fairylights adorn the walls creating a perfect Christmassy wonderland. Slightly incongruous this time of year but lovely nonetheless. Up on the ceiling were these beautiful lampshades. Such a simple idea but very sweet indeed, much like the strudel itself...
