Do you begin and end your day with the world framed by a window or windscreen? Maybe it’s your own or perhaps it is the fingerprint smeared one of the bus or train. Do you run? Or cycle? Do you stare ahead, focussed on the point of horizon, enjoying the sensation of the landmarks flying past you? Or do you walk? Head dead ahead. Music sounding. Telephone chattering. Daydreaming.

Have you walked or driven the same route for as long as you can remember? Have you one day, for whatever reason, looked up and seen something that surprised you? A building above a shop perhaps? A blue plaque? A piece of graffiti impossibly high up? A flag. This blog is about what you can see when you tilt your chin and see a different view of your everyday world.

Look up.

You might enjoy it.

You might see something good.

Steel Scales

As you can probably tell by now- I use the trains a lot. Living in London doesn't really necessitate a car and, as much as I'd love to, it's impossible to walk everywhere. Therefore I spend a lot of time lurking around train stations waiting for inevitably late trains and staring skyward. This photo was taken outside of my nearest tube stop, near where the buses line up. I love the way that the pattern of the metal looks a little like scales.

Lethal

I spotted this on the barrier above Harringay Rail station. After trying to fathom what it was, why it was there and what it does, I concluded that it was probably a human version of those spikes that get put on shop fronts to stop the pigeons settling. If anyone knows what it really is- do get in touch. It looks pretty sinister to me...

Tottenham court butterfly

Another lovely example of mosaic, this time in Tottenham Court tube station. A lovely shot of colour to the tube system, sure to brighten up a commute.

A way fit for a queen

This is the fantastic view you get when you look up the spiral staircase at Queensway tube station in London. I have never been a huge fan of lifts- I'll get in one if I really have to but if given the option I will always take the stairs. Because of this, all around London I get to see a lot of views similar to this one. As pretty as a spiralling shell but still one of the sturdiest ways to build a stair.

Got my eye on you...

Anyone who's spent any time travelling on the trains will know that public transport is a hotspot for security. Lack of bins, sniffer dogs and CCTV, probably being the top three ways the transport police are keeping tabs on you and apparently making things safer. I have little to hide, and so am not really that bothered by CCTV. There have been countless articles and papers written on how it encroaches on our human rights but in my eyes, if it helps solve a crime or track down a missing runaway, I'm not all that phased by it. It is sort of strange though when you look up and see reams of camera lenses staring at you. I always feel like I should wave- just to give the person watching something to smile at.

Not train-spotting in Brighton

When I used to live in Brighton I used to get the train a lot from the main station. I travelled back to the seaside a couple of weeks ago and, standing in the main train terminal, was surprised that I hadn't taken a photo of the architecture before. An intricate yet sturdy looking web of steel and curved glass, it gives the platforms the certain grandeur that has awarded this building that of a listed one.
