Do you begin and end your day with the world framed by a window or windscreen? Maybe it’s your own or perhaps it is the fingerprint smeared one of the bus or train. Do you run? Or cycle? Do you stare ahead, focussed on the point of horizon, enjoying the sensation of the landmarks flying past you? Or do you walk? Head dead ahead. Music sounding. Telephone chattering. Daydreaming.

Have you walked or driven the same route for as long as you can remember? Have you one day, for whatever reason, looked up and seen something that surprised you? A building above a shop perhaps? A blue plaque? A piece of graffiti impossibly high up? A flag. This blog is about what you can see when you tilt your chin and see a different view of your everyday world.

Look up.

You might enjoy it.

You might see something good.

Anti-Establishment

I pass this sign on foot on my way to work on a regular basis and am surprised that its graffiti add-on has not yet been removed (it's been there for quite a while now) There is something quite laughable that the fact that the staff of Holloway Prison haven't cleaned this mildly offensive image off their main sign yet. Perhaps it is a Banksy (aren't most things these days?!) or maybe they just find it amusing and cant be bothered to get it scrubbed off. Maybe the authorities do have a sense of humour after all...

Religious Lightenment

The first time I left the main station in Amsterdam it was dark and lit up next to the terminal was this sign watching over the city. A bit of a brash claim I think, speaking on behalf of someone else...

Sexxxy

Amsterdam isn't all about pink lit windows and scantily clad prostitutes. The stoic sign above stating 'no sex' is a reminder that the red light district is, generally, kept to its own specific area and that not every window is up for sale. The second sign made me laugh purely because of its lack of tact and humorous name. Whilst out in the evening in this part of the town (the red light district literally seconds round the corner) I noticed whole gangs of drunk blokes pissing on pretty much anything that didn't move. Quite gross really. It seems a sign for the local 'urinoir' is probably quite relevant round these parts.

Friendly Buddhist

Blue-tacked up high in a shop in Wood Green, this sign makes a nice change from the ones threatening you about breaking stuff (which always makes me certain that I am going to).

Stylish Builders Merchants

Lovely shiny tiled sign for a builders merchants round the corner from my local tube stop. I love how something so stylised and pretty is advertising something usually perceived to be very rough and practical. The light bouncing off the black makes me think of a sign outside a theatre for a really camp musical production.

All's Fair in Love and Football

I live quite near to the Arsenal stadium and silently curse whenever there's a home game on as all the supporters clog up the tube and buses. This pub, round the corner from Finsbury Park Station, is obviously very patriotic about their team but I can't help but think that this sign sums up everything I dislike about football culture in this country. It's not the game I take issue with, it's the mentality of some of the supporters, giving it a bad name, that puts me off.

Pie in the sky (well on the ceiling)

My boyfriend took me to this lovely pub in Colchester the other weekend. Whilst enjoying a pint of ale we sat under this sign inside. After admiring it for a while I noticed that someone had written pie on the adjoining wall. Wonder what type of pie they were referring to...

A grand desire

Still in Brighton, though down by the sea this time along Marina Drive. This sign has been up for as long as I remember and apparently it is a product of a Brighton Uni art project. I don't know if I completely 'get' the statement,it seems a little wishy-washy for my liking. However, it is the scrubbed out writing underneath that I want to know more about...maybe someone was contesting this idea!

Manufactory mosaic

I saw this beautiful mosaicked (sp?) sign whilst frantically lost somewhere between Russell Square and Oxford Street. The notion of just walking in a straight line till you hit a tube stop is not always effective! Anyway, I loved the colours in this old school sign and I'm loving the word 'manufactory'. Whoever lives in this block of flats will have a great way of giving directions to their house...'the one with the big, green, mosaic thing!' There is also a smaller sign above the door which is slightly obscured by a lesser attractive one. All I can read in 'electrical' but I'm not sure that's all of it. Think I'll have to go back for another look later on...

Time for Tea

Atop the Tea building

Missing an E

Above a seemingly normal block of flats in Shoreditch sits a sign missing a vital vowel. (Unless it is really referring to Douglas Adams Meaning of Liff. Who knows?) Either way I wonder who is responsible for it and what its purpose is.
